Innovation, Compassion, and Transformation in the Episcopal Diocese of California
We selected Expanding Horizons as the title and theme of our campaign after we heard the words of this prayer, attributed to the explorer and privateer, Sir Francis Drake. While many of America’s founding moments happened on the East Coast, it was on the West Coast, in a little inlet near Point Reyes located in the northernmost part of our diocese, that the first service using the Book of Common Prayer was said on American soil. Discovery and disturbance, and the transformation that come from them, have been a part of the life and experience of California, and the Diocese has been a part of that transformative work for 170 years. We ask that everyone in our diocese join together as we pray these words.
Expanding Horizons Prayer, attributed to Sir. Francis Drake, 1577
Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wilder seas
Where storms will show Your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask you to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push back the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
This we ask in the name of our Captain,
Who is Jesus Christ. Amen.
Over the past months the Diocese of California’s Development Team has faithfully engaged in a study process to explore the needs, projects, visions, and ideas for capital fundraising in the Diocese of California. The study process reveals a community of congregations, ministries, and people ready to support, ready to dream, and eager to lead this historic and heroic effort in this time and place. The campaign organizers build on the strengths of the Bay Area — innovation, disruptive learning, civic engagement, spiritual seeking, and natural beauty — as inspiration for the campaign. Organizers imagine a bold church for a deeply thirsty region of their nation, following the Gospel where it leads in caring for the poor, the stranger, its neighbors, its members, and their planet.
The Diocese of California is as an inflection point, where a strategic investment can strengthen and grow the church for future generations and make an impact on the most pressing issues in our communities.
This is a very exciting time in the storied history of the Diocese of California. The diocese faces distinct challenges, but these challenges bring tremendous opportunities as it embarks on the most significant fundraising campaign in recent memory. Through your participation, your stewardship, and your generosity, all those who participate can serve this great cultural tapestry that makes up the Diocese of California. Together, generous givers will create a foundation for future generations to experience God’s love and life a Christ-focused life right here in the Diocese of California.
How to Get Involved
Opportunities for Congregations
All congregations in the Diocese of California are invited to be collaborators in fundraising for projects that impact their congregational life and their neighborhoods.
Preparing to Collaborate
Projects to be included in the diocesan collaborative campaign should be:
- significant capital gifts
- not for operations
- identified projects implementable within the time table of the campaign (by Fall 2017).
- campaigns can be of any size or complexity
Commitments in Collaboration
Congregations participating in the diocesan campaign will receive great benefit. For many congregations, coordinating a capital campaign — with its many moving parts — quickly overwhelms bookkeeping, office staff, and stewardship committees. Expanding Horizons will help parishes and missions in meeting their capital fundraising goals while taking on the work of planning, solicitation, reporting, and tracking income and pledges.
Congregations interested in collaborating will contribute a nominal percentage of their overall capital fundraising to the overall diocesan campaign.
In exchange, congregations will receive:
- dedicated campaign consulting to work with congregation leadership
- pledge tracking and billing for 3-5 year pledges
- partnership, as desired or required, for solicitation and cultivation of donors
The Bishop and Development staff of the Diocese of California pledge to honor all donor relationships within congregations and institutions, sharing only the information that we are permitted or required to share, and retaining relationships only with the express permission of congregation leadership.
