Episcopal Youth Event delegation prepares for trip to Philadelphia

On Friday June 27, 13 DioCal high school youth took DioHouse by storm for their pre-Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) overnight orientation. In one week, these youth will travel across the country to Philadelphia to participate in the triennial Episcopal Youth Event where they will take part in worship services, small group meetings, workshops, and urban mission projects alongside over 1,000 other international Episcopal youth.

The DioCal delegation gathered on Friday night for fellowship and preparation for their pilgrimage. They met in small groups to discuss their experiences of identifying as a Christian in today’s world and how — if given the chance — they would change the church. Later in the evening, the youth engaged in an empowerment workshop centered around personal fundraising and then practiced their new fundraising skills on Bishop Marc and Sheila Andrus who surprised the group with a visit (and the bishop did pledge money to the delegation based on their successful “ask”!). The youth also discussed ways in which they can stay connected to the diocese while they are in EYE through pictures, video, tweets, and blog posts. Look for posts from the youth on the Diocese of California’s Facebook page with the hashtag #DioCalEYE. DioCal participants will be posting on other social media using the same hashtag.

The overall feeling of the gathering was centered around pride for the diocese and a desire to share experiences and give back to the church that supports its young people. While EYE often features some friendly inter-diocesan competition, it also offers youth the unique experience of being a part of an international church. EYE broadens a young person’s understanding of what it means to be an Episcopalian, and the youth of DioCal are ready and willing to jump right in.

Look out for more updates from the DioCal EYE delegation and please keep the youth in your prayers from July 9–16.
