Honoring the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington

The Rev. Malcolm Byrd, First A.M.E. Zion Church, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, joined the Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus in Grace Cathedral’s Chapel of Grace for today’s 12:10 Eucharist honoring the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

The Rev. Byrd preached passionately about the need not only to listen, but to hear with our hearts, as Americans continue to struggle with issues of racism. He brought forward the current problem of San Francisco’s dwindling African American population and it’s impact on his congregation and the City. Bishop Andrus presided.

At noon — the exact date and time of Dr. Martin Luther King’s "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial — Grace Cathedral rang its bells along with houses of worship across the country in honor of the anniversary.
