Trinity Menlo Park Youth Group at General Convention

On Tuesday, July 10 in the midst of General Convention in Austin, Texas, around 120 youth and chaperones representing a dozen dioceses and individual parishes met at the JW Marriott for an event dubbed, “Youth Gathering.” This was an affiliated event of the Executive Office of General Convention who arranged for the space and placed the event on the official General Convention calendar. It was hosted by a group of eleven youth and two adults from Trinity, Menlo Park who were on their mission trip. The event was intended primarily as a time for all youth at General Convention to meet, experience the diversity of the Episcopal Church, and to have fun together.

Bishop Marc Andrus of the Diocese of California and Bishop Andy Doyle of the Diocese of Texas welcomed all who were present and spoke about General Convention. Bronwyn Skov, Director for Formation, Youth and Young Adult Ministries for the Episcopal Church, spoke to the importance of such a gathering of youth. Skov also introduced the General Convention Official Youth Presence, a group of eighteen youth selected from throughout the church who sat in legislative sessions where they had seat and voice but not vote.

In addition to Bishop’s speaking, the attendees heard from Patrick Kangrga, Associate for Youth Ministries at Trinity who coordinated the event. Kangrga spoke about how this was a wonderful opportunity to gather young people from throughout the Episcopal Church that was hard to let pass. The event was co-sponsored by the Diocese of Texas and Sewanee: The University of the South.
