UTO awards All Saints, San Leandro, $56,000 grant for environmental initiative

The United Thank Offering of The Episcopal Church awarded 32 grants for a total of just over $1.1 million for the mission and ministry of The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. The United Thank Offering is a ministry to promote thankfulness and mission in the church. Known worldwide as UTO, United Thank Offering grants are awarded for projects that address human needs, both domestically and internationally in The Episcopal Church. UTO grants in the Diocese of California are administered by Episcopal Charities, the local outreach arm of the diocese. The theme for this year’s UTO grant cycle was “Safeguarding God’s creation and renewing the face of the earth.”

All Saints, San Leandro, a member congregation of the Diocese of California, was awarded $56,000 for a project entitled “Greening All Saints.” The Rev. Justin R. Cannon, rector of All Saints and an advocate for environmental causes, wrote the grant for the church. In addition to serving as the priest at All Saints, Cannon is the founder and director of Holy Hikes, an environmental ministry with chapters in Indiana, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Wisconsin.

This grant will involve a comprehensive initiative to “green the church,” including the installation of solar panels that will supply 100% of the church’s energy. On Sunday, June 12, All Saints celebrated “Sacred Earth Sunday” commemorating a World Day of Prayer for the Earth and every Wednesday the church holds a noontime contemplative “Celtic Earth Mass.”

Cannon comments, “How can we worship the Creator without honoring and caring for the creation?”  All Saints is an inclusive, welcoming, and progressive Episcopal congregation nestled in the heart of the Broadmoor district in San Leandro. The church holds Sunday Services at 8 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. More information can be found online at www.saintsalive.net
