EfM Mentor Training

Greetings Ministry Colleagues!

I am so happy you are interested in Mentor Training for the Education for Ministry Program in the Diocese of California. Whether you are considering being a mentor for the first time, or are an experienced mentor taking training again, I look forward not only to providing training you need but also to supporting your vocation as a mentor. Our 2017 training sessions that will be offered at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) in Berkeley.

Basic Mentor Training will be held on September 22 to 24, 2017 at least one Basic/In service training and, depending on the experience of the registrants, Formation Training, Advanced Mentor Training or a second Basic Training will be held. Each basic training group can have no more than eight trainees (Formation can have 12). Formation Training topics will be announced in the summer. Please note, Formation Training is only for active mentors who have taken at least two Basic Trainings and been certified as having Formation Skill level by their last trainer. IF you aren’t sure, you probably need to take Basic.

If the group is full, email Andrew Han, andrewhan@ymail.com, to be put on a waiting list. I will email if and when a space becomes available. If less than six people register, the training will be canceled.

Cost:
The cost of the training will be $200, which includes five meals, but no lodging. Some scholarship funds are available to match parish scholarship support for active mentors in the Diocese of California. Please let me know if you have a financial need, and I will do my best to make sure it doesn’t keep you from the attending the training.

Registering:
Click here to register for the September 2017 training. We strongly prefer you pay with a debit or credit card or PayPal. If you must pay by check, your check must arrive within two weeks, or your registration will be cancelled unless you have made arrangements by emailing Andrew Han, andrewhan@ymail.com. Note that the last two basic trainings have been fully booked, so please let us know as soon as you can if you must cancel.

Your place will be held when your payment is received. Please note there are no refunds unless we have to cancel because there are not enough people for a group, but if you find you cannot make a training, you may send someone in your place. Please, please let us know if you cannot come. We may be able to issue a refund if we are able to fill your place with someone on the waiting list.

Schedule:
All sessions will begin in Berkeley on Friday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. Friday sessions will end at 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, unless your trainer sets a different start or ending time, training will begin at 8 a.m. and will end by 6 p.m.

Certification requires a full 18 contact hours with your trainer, so you will need to attend the entire event. You must arrive by 4:45 p.m. on Friday. We plan the weekend schedule carefully in order to use our trainer’s time well, so if you have schedule constraints that would prevent you from arriving on Friday afternoon or staying through Sunday, please let me know before you register.

Food:
Dinner is included on Friday, but not Saturday or Sunday. Saturday and Sunday will begin with an optional continental breakfast (yogurt, muffins, fruit, juice, hard boiled eggs) at 7:30 a.m. Coffee and tea are available around the corner at the Brewed Awakenings coffee shop.

Lodging:
TBA

Certification as a Mentor
Please be aware that certification as an EfM mentor is not automatic. An important part of the trainer’s role is to discern when mentor‐trainees are appropriately prepared to lead an EfM group. Once certified, you will be able to enroll an EfM group through the School of Theology at the University of the South. But this training alone will enhance your other ministries in significant ways, so I encourage you to participate whether or not you plan to mentor!
