The Rev. Stefani Schatz called as Diocese of California’s Canon to the Ordinary
Schatz brings experience from years of service around the church
April 5, San Francisco — The Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus has called the Rev. Stefani Schatz to serve as Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of California. After a four-month search process, Schatz has accepted the position and informed her parish in Reno, Nevada, of her departure.
Prior to becoming an Episcopal priest, Schatz worked as a legal secretary and in direct sales. Schatz attended Episcopal Divinity School, focusing on congregational life. She has served as rector of Trinity Church, Reno, which has over 700 members since 2008. She presently serves as President of the Standing Committee for the Diocese of Nevada, and was a deputy to General Convention in 2012. Schatz has experience at smaller churches and served for a period of time in the United Kingdom.
Throughout her ministry, Stefani Schatz has gained experience with mutual ministry reviews and strategic planning. She has facilitated trainings on multicultural congregations and change. In addition to her work within the church, Schatz has been involved with various non-profits in geographic areas she has served. Schatz’s résumé shows a strong commitment to interfaith collaboration and cooperation, and she is known as a good listener, discerning advisor, and empathetic pastor.
The Rt. Rev. Marc Handley Andrus, bishop of California, said, “Stefani brings strong and varied gifts, experience in congregations of different sizes and patterns of ministry, and excitement about life and mission in the Diocese of California. I am happy to have her join our enormously talented diocesan staff. Together this group of Christ's followers will beautifully serve our vibrant, evolving diocese.
“We miss our friend and colleague, Michael Barlowe, who has left a decisive, indelible influence for good in DioCal. I also believe Stefani will pick up the Canon to the Ordinary's work at the same high level of commitment and competence.
“While Michael was still here, we were focusing the the Canon to the Ordinary's job description to be even more concentrated on helping our congregations become more responsive to the changing needs and possibilities of contemporary life in the Bay Area. Stefani will come into a ministry position, thus that will be closely tailored to our diocese's hopes.“
Schatz said about the call, “I am honored to be invited by Bishop Marc into this role of Canon to the Ordinary. It is a full-circle moment to return to the diocese in which I first encountered The Episcopal Church — St John's, Oakland —more than 25 years ago after graduating from Mills College. To be, once again, a part of this vibrant, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and geographically-diverse diocese will be wonderful.”
Stefani Schatz will officially begin working on Monday, June 3, and will preach at the ordinations on Saturday, June 8. She will begin participating in senior staff meetings at the diocesan offices almost immediately through Skype. During this time she will start to familiarize herself with upcoming events of the diocese and its procedures. She is married to the Rev. Dr. Joseph Duggan who serves as part-time Priest-in-Charge at St Francis Episcopal Church, Fair Oaks, Calif., in the Diocese of Northern California. They live with two wonderful tabby cats: “the PB” and “the ABC.”
