Director of Children’s Ministries Job Description

Overview

Christ Episcopal Church has served Los Altos and the wider world for over 100 years through enlivening worship, education, music, fellowship, and service. We also have a vibrant parochial school, Ventana, founded in 2005, offering programs for children from age two through fifth grade. The Director of Children’s Ministries primarily supports the spiritual development of the children of the parish but has some contact with Ventana students and families as well. His/her responsibilities are diverse, encompassing teaching, coordination, and hospitality. It is essential that s/he have experience working directly with youth and children of diverse ages, preferably in a faith-based setting, and demonstrates a friendly and engaging demeanor.

 

Summary of Duties

  • Develop curricula, lesson plans, and resource materials for weekly Sunday School class. 
  • Lead Sunday School, in conjunction with volunteer teachers.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteer Sunday School teachers.
  • Nurture the parent community and plan family-friendly programming.
  • Oversee the organization, supplies, and cleanliness of spaces used for children and youth gatherings.
  • Work with rector and other staff to create the annual calendar, develop Sunday School projects and activities, and ensure the work of the children is integrated into and celebrated in the wider life of the Parish.
  • From time to time, write announcement for the church newsletter describing Sunday school activities and projects.
  • Assist with special events and celebrations.
  • Contribute to a harmonious work and worship environment.
  • Develop programming for the Ventana Choristers on the Sundays they sing in worship and liaise with Ventana families.
  • Support Volunteer Youth Minister as needed. 
  • Attend weekly Staff Meetings.
  • Complete mandatory Safe Church training and background check, and facilitate this process with new teachers and volunteers through the Parish Administrator.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Open to clergy and lay applicants
  • 4-year bachelor’s college degree preferred; 2-year associates degree with additional experience acceptable
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working directly with youth and children
  • Extremely strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience teaching Sunday school or leading a youth group
  • Strong computer and social media skills
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and overlapping deadlines with flexibility, humor, and patience
  • Desire to support the overlapping ministries of Christ Church and Ventana School
  • Familiarity with the Episcopal Church preferred
  • Excellent references; position will also require a criminal background check

 

Salary: DOE
Status: Part-time – 10 hours/week
