Official Youth Presence for Diocesan Convention

Official Youth Presence for Diocesan Convention

This year's Diocesan Convention will be Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26 at Grace Cathedral. At thier annual meetings this past winter, most congregations elected their delegates. In the coming months, deaneries have the opportunity to nominate one youth and one alternate to be in the Official Youth presence.

There are only a few requirements - the youth must currently be enrolled in high school and they must be nominated at a deanery meeting before convention. The diocese can provide assistance, documentation, or support if the youth would like to ask permission to be absent from school on Friday afternoon so they can attend those sessions.

In years past the Official Youth Presence has slept overnight at Diocesan House and sat together, away from adult delegates during convention. Last year we made a switch to having the youth sit with the delegates from their congregation. That way they could be a part of discussions amongst adults they know and are known by. (And they're not overly tired from sleeping poorly on the conference room floor.) The youth were able to make their voices heard at a local and at a diocesan level. They gained important lessons in local leadership that they could take with them into the coming year. It is our hope that having the Official Youth Presence be a part of their congregation's delegation, that the youth are made a more permanent part of local leadership and decision making.
