Not with a bang ….

Testimony before the World Mission Committee Friday suggested consideration of the proposed Anglican Covenant will end not with a bang of controversy but with a more muted diminuendo of debate. Speakers at the Friday night hearing ranged from calls for approval of the Covenant (from the Bishop and a Deputy from Tennessee) to calls for outright rejection of the proposal (from the Rev. Canon Susan Russell and Oasis California) and support for a continuing Indaba process (Rev. Tobias Heller). Given the importance ascribed to “preserving the Anglican Communion” in past General Conventions, the hearing was sedate and low key. A subcommittee will review testimony and discuss the proposed covenant on Sunday before the full committee takes up the issue on Monday.  Background here.
