On Saturday, August 5, 2023 members of the Bishop Search & Transition Committee met to take another step in the discernment of a proposed slate of candidates.
Prior to this meeting, the committee members were hard at work evaluating the materials from those candidates selected for the interview process. At the August 9 meeting, the committee agreed to move forward with a group of candidates to a shared discernment retreat.
The candidates will attend the discernment retreat along with Bishop Search & Transition committee members to explore together the call of each candidate.
Following the discernment retreat, the committee will make its recommendation to the Standing Committee for a preliminary slate of candidates. Once approved, the slate will be announced on September 22, 2023. At this time, nominations of additional candidates to the slate by petition will be accepted until October 1, 2023. The final slate of candidates will be announced on October 27, 2023.
A series of Meet & Greet meetings at parishes across the diocese will take place November 3-5, 2023. Delegates to the Special Electing Convention and clergy will vote to elect the ninth bishop on December 2, 2023.
Following the election, standing committees and bishops with jurisdiction across The Episcopal Church will vote to offer their consent during a consent process.
Pending the consent of the church, the celebration of the ordination and consecration of the ninth bishop will take place on May 4, 2024. The newly ordained ninth bishop will serve as bishop coadjutor, and Bishop Marc will continue as bishop diocesan until his retirement commences on July 24, 2024.
This announcement invites a time of transition and prayer for Bishop Marc, Dr. Sheila, the candidates and their families, and for all in the Diocese of California during the search process for the ninth bishop.

Article by the Bishop Search and Transition Committee
The Bishop Search and Transition Committee gathered Saturday, June 17 to review applications for the role of Ninth Bishop of California. The meeting at Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP), the Episcopal seminary in Berkeley, began with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist by the Rev. Dr. Paul Fromberg, the committee’s co-chair. Following the service, members of the Diocese of California Standing Committee offered words of encouragement before leaving the Bishop Search and Transition Committee to its discernment work.
The committee spent the next six hours poring over the extensive materials offered by each applicant to discern which of them will advance to the next step in the process, which is a series of interviews.
At the end of the day’s gathering, Rev. Dr. Fromberg concluded, “We made great progress toward identifying those individuals who will be included in our preliminary slate.” Bishop Search and Transition Committee co-chair Brenda Paulin added, “I was moved by how sincerely and thoughtfully our applicants and committee members engaged in this process.”
The next step in the process is for the Bishop Search and Transition Committee to finalize a preliminary slate, which it will present to the Standing Committee for approval. The preliminary slate is scheduled to be announced on September 22, 2023. That announcement marks the start of the ten-day period during which nominations by petition will be accepted before a final slate is determined.
People in the Diocese of California will have an opportunity to meet with the final slate of nominees at a series of “Meet & Greet” gatherings scheduled November 2 through 5, 2023 at a selection of parishes and missions. The specific times and locations for the Meet & Greets will be announced once the final slate is determined. Voting will occur among clergy and lay delegates at a special electing convention on December 2, 2023.
Following a process of church-wide consent, the approved bishop-elect will be ordained and consecrated at Grace Cathedral on May 4, 2024. Bishop Marc will retire on July 24, 2024, amid celebrations of thanksgiving for all he and Dr. Sheila Andrus have shared with and contributed to our diocese.
The Standing Committee and Bishop Search and Transition Committee members ask for prayer for their work, and for all transitions in the life of our diocese and in the lives of Bishop Marc and his family, as well as the bishop-elect and her/his/their family.

Our current Bishop, Marc Handley Andrus, has announced his retirement, effective in July 2024.
In response, the Diocese of California has entered a time of transition as it embarks on a search process for its Ninth Bishop, whom it will elect in December of 2023. The process will continue with a wider consent process across The Episcopal Church, followed by a consecration service in May of 2024. The first part of the search process involves the Bishop Search & Transition Committee publishing a Diocesan Profile and inviting applications from those who may feel called to serve as the Ninth Bishop of the Diocese.
There will be a brief overlap between the consecration and Bishop Marc’s retirement in July of 2024.
The search for the next Bishop in the Diocese of California involves many steps. The prayerful participation of all in our Diocese is important in following along with each milestone and especially in praying.
The Bishop Search & Transition Committee members invite every person, every parish, every Bible study and prayer small group, and every gathering of Episcopalians across the Diocese to offer petitions and thanksgiving throughout this process.
We ask that you review the milestones of our journey of transition and follow along with them as you are able, offering your prayers to lift up this process and to invite the Holy Spirit to move among us.
