COVID 19 Update & Statement (November 15)

With the Governor’s announcement on Monday that California would be “pulling an emergency brake” on lifting any reopening restrictions, the Diocese of California is similarly pausing any regathering plans for at least the next 6 weeks. All of the counties in our Diocese moved back at least one tier in state restrictions, and we are matching those restrictions in our Diocesan guidelines.

If indoor worship is allowed in your county (Red Tier), it should be very limited, very small, and very short. The more space you can provide between households the better. All methods of increasing air flow should be used. Masks must be worn at all times and no congregational responses, singing, or chanting is allowed. Congregations are strongly advised to consider outdoor worship even where indoor worship is permitted. Other small group meetings should also be limited, small, short, and preferably online. Please make sure you have submitted a plan for indoor gatherings with the Covid Task Force and have received approval before moving forward.

If indoor worship is prohibited in your county (Purple Tier), outdoor worship is allowed but with only 25% capacity of the available space (allowing for social distancing) or 100 people, whichever is fewer. Indoor recording and livestreaming are still allowed with your stable worship teams. All in-person gatherings require a submitted and approved regathering plan. 

As we approach Advent, the time of holy anticipation and waiting, this year there is also a sense of dread and fear intermingled with our worship. Our churches can be a source of calm, patience, peace, and holy waiting as 2020 comes to a contentious close. By keeping our parishioners and staff safe we can embrace the Holy Spirit working to build the Beloved Community. DeChardin reminds us “we are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. We should like to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new. And yet it is the law of all progress, that it is made by passing through some stages of instability.” It is my prayer that we can all “trust in the slow work of God.”
