Backpack drive at Holy Family, Half Moon Bay

Posted on August 16, 2016

Holy Family, Half Moon Bay, once again took the lead in organizing the Coastside’s annual backpack drive. For nearly fifteen years, Holy Family has coordinated the effort to collect supplies and raise funds to provide new backpacks and new school supplies for needy families preparing to send children into the new school year. Some years, the effort provides up to five-hundred backpacks — this year’s count was 322. Coastside Hope, Catholic Worker, and the Cabrillo Unified School District provide the list of students who participate in the giveaway, and partners include Coastside Lutheran, Community UMC, Rotary, Coastside Mothers’ Club, and St. Peter’s Catholic (Pacifica). Half Moon Bay’s library, along with several families, provided a large stock of both new and slightly used books from which students could select one. Pictured below, intermingled with some of the stuffed backpacks, are a few of Holy Family’s volunteers at the backpack “stuffing”: Ken Myers (this year’s coordinator), Beth Myers, Flo Driscoll, and Vivian Costello.
