A Safe and Sacred Space: An Oasis for LGBTQ Worshippers in Manchester, UK

The Deacon Travels: September 2013

In September, I was very fortunate to be the guest of Father Kevin Crinks, who had visited us in friary earlier in the year. His home in the vicarage in Leigh, UK (Diocese of Manchester), was the base for our travels in Northern England. A real high point of my visit was the monthly Eucharist for LGBTQ parishioners at St. Chrysostom parish church in Manchester.

A Different Kind of Holy Week

This year I made a commitment to not darken the door of a church for Holy Week. I almost managed it.

Palm Sunday kicked off the week as I was joined by Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and Franciscan brothers for our fourth annual Palm Sunday procession through the Castro. This year we handed out 500 palms in bars, on the sidewalks and in local businesses. Cars stopped for us and drivers asked for palms. Very often we heard "oh, yeah. I forgot it was Palm Sunday".
