Vice-Chancellor and Associate for Congregational Ministries

On January 1, the Rev. Gary Wm England began his diaconal appointment as Associate for Congregational Ministries on the Bishop’s staff as part of the Working Group for Congregational Ministries and in collaboration with the Finance Working Group. In addition, and most recently, Gary was appointed by Bishop Marc as Vice-Chancellor, working in conjunction with the Chancellor’s Working Group. Upon this appointment, Gary stated, “I am honored to be able to serve the Diocese of California in these capacities and look forward to working with both Clergy and Lay leadership in all our congregations.”

Gary’s ministry is to assist leadership throughout the diocese in enhancing business acumen by assessing current needs, identifying skills and resources, and establishing mechanisms for collaboratively sharing and deploying these skills and resources among congregations and institutions. Areas may include HR, facilities management, financial and strategic planning, vestry development, and legal issues. 

Gary Wm England was ordained Deacon in the Diocese of Kentucky in August 2011 and became resident in the Diocese of California in 2020.  He is married to John Reliford and has three adult children Ana, Jimmy, and Adrian. Gary is a native of Alabama and until his relocation to the Bay Area in 2018, he lived in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee.  Gary is admitted to the bar in all these states and is now Registered In-House Counsel in California.  Gary retired as General Counsel of a large private investment firm in June 2018 but continues to work part-time as an arbitrator and as GC and HR Consultant for a few long-term clients. In addition to parish liturgical and pastoral duties, as Deacon, Gary has worked with parishes to accomplish visioning and strategic planning, dealing with organizational restructuring and human resources issues, as well as planning stewardship campaigns and mission and outreach initiatives.
